ImmunoConcEpT Retreat 2019

In Oct 9th to 11th, ImmunoConcEpT get out from the lab for a scientific retreat in Carcans-Maubuisson.

This event brought together all lab members in a convivial atmosphere and enjoyable location. Scientific presentations and team building activities featured in the programme. Mixed teams had to challenge in orienteering course, kayak games, karaoke as well as more scientific activities.

For this edition, we organized a new scientific game where people had to think during 1h within interdisciplinary subgroups about “the challenges of immunology for the next ten years”.

For this purpose, we asked colleagues outside of the lab to tell us what they see as a main challenge (or question) of future Immunology. We were glad to receive many proposals from diverse origins (in terms of scientific backgrounds, geographical origins, as well as types of questions). For the sake of time, we could only work on seven of them (randomly selected).  You can find the video of the synthetic outputs by each interdisciplinary group:

Q1 : Most immunotherapies (against tumors or against auto-immune disorders) are based on genetic models and perturbations where one or two genes are perturbed in a static and all-or-none manner. What technical and conceptual leap do we need to drive experimentalists and clinicians to explore dynamic perturbations with multi-tiered/well-timed interventions? (EN)

Q2 : Certaines greffes d’organe (ex: cornée) ne nécessitent pas de traitement immunosuppresseur, ni de ” HLA matching” parce qu’elles ont lieu dans des “zones de privilège immun” (existence d’une barrière physique isolant la zone des cellules immunitaires circulantes et d’un environnement immunotolérant). Une question essentielle en Immuno pour les 10 années à venir serait de “comprendre les mécanismes qui sous-tendent le privilège immun afin de développer des stratégies thérapeutiques visant à induire localement une réponse immunotolérante efficace “. Q3 : Je poserai la question suivante : Est-ce que le système immunitaire peut réellement anticiper sans l’apport du système nerveux? Existe-il un système immunitaire prédictif comme il existe un cerveau bayésien? (EN)

Q4 : Immunologie : l’étude des mécanismes qui permettent de perpétuer l’identique ? (FR)

Q5 : Autre question, très générale, qu’on se pose aussi dans le cas de nos mécanismes d’infection virale : l’immunité, intracellulaire notamment, est-elle également soumise à des mécanismes de séparation de phase (changement de propriété physique locale due à une accumulation de protéines qui vont alors rendre moins soluble l’environnement et le rendre ainsi accessible, ou pas accessible, à des acteurs cellulaires)? Q6 : Response prediction based on the past state of repertoire/immune system. (EN)

Q7 : Neurodegeneration and immunity: immunity is involved more and more as an active component of neurodegeneration. How? What activate the immune system in those rather sterile condition? (EN)
