The group of Victor Appay focuses on human immunology, in particular the study of the immune competence declines with aging, associated with chronic viral infection or cancer settings, and aims at finding solutions to restore or boost effective immunity in these contexts. Indeed, disease in the elderly is related in part to the changes of the immune system competence with age. Growing evidence indicates that advanced age is associated with a variety of phenotypic and functional alterations of the cells and organs of the immune system, and a hyper-inflammatory status, referred to as immunosenescence and inflammaging, respectively.
